ALERT - Resurgence in Distraction Theft incidents

4:17p.m., Saturday, February 9, 2019

DRPS have detected a recent increase in "Distraction Thefts". In these incidents, the fraudster approaches an unsuspecting victim and tells them they dropped an item such as money or they ask for directions. While the person is distracted, a second suspect will approach and pick pocket their wallet and/or bank/credit cards from a purse or pocket.

As women typically carry a purse they are commonly the target; and seniors most often. As a precaution, carry cash and debit/credit cards separately, keep your purse closed and always be aware of your surroundings while using a point of sale terminal or an ATM, and while approaching your vehicle (in this case, have your car keys in hand and don't hesitate to use the alarm if you feel threatened).
